Fourth of July Travel and High Gas Prices
Despite the highest Independence Day gas prices since 2008, holiday travel is on the rise in Texas, according to a projection by AAA.
Of the estimated 3 million travelers in Texas this Fourth of July, 2.5 million will reach their destinations by automobile, a 2.9 percent increase from last year.
“As in years past, a large number of Texans will celebrate Independence Day with friends and family as well as with cook-outs and fireworks,” said Rhonda Wilson, AAA Texas vice president of branch operations.
Analysts at AAA have found Texans’ desire to travel has risen four out of the past five years since the recession.
This year, that comes in the face of an unexpected price increase at the pump. One gallon of regular unleaded gasoline averaged $3.52 across the state last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
