Big Donors Tread Softly in Texas Lieutenant Governor Race
While some of Texas’ GOP high rollers have written sizable checks to one or two of the Republican candidates for lieutenant governor, many are staying on the sidelines — at least until they see who survives Tuesday’s primary.
Of the 25 biggest contributors to gubernatorial hopeful Greg Abbott, 13 have declined to give or have given $25,000 or less to any of the four Republicans seeking the state’s No. 2 political office,The Dallas Morning News found.
Another dozen of Abbott mega-donors have stepped up, writing a check for at least $50,000 to one of the lieutenant governor hopefuls, an analysis of campaign records shows.
A few, such as Houston road contractor James “Doug” Pitcock and former telecommunications executive and horse breeder Kenny Troutt of Dallas, made six-figure bets in the scrap for lieutenant governor — mostly giving to incumbent David Dewhurst.
