166px-Bottle_of_Shiner_BockTexas is seriously considering beer sales at several sports late this winter and spring that could expand to football games next season, sources familiar with the discussions said.

Final university approval has not yet been given, sources cautioned. If it is granted, sales could begin as early as this week. Contrary to reports earlier Tuesday, beer was not served at Erwin Center for the Texas women’s basketball game against TCU. The earliest would be Wednesday’s men’s basketball game with Baylor.

Initial plans call for beer sales at men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and in a special fan fest section at the Texas Relays as part of a pilot program. Barring any complications or problems, beer sales could come to Royal-Memorial Stadium by the home opener against North Texas on Aug. 30. Beer has long been available in private boxes at the stadium.
