Duck Dynasty Stars To Sponsor NASCAR Race at Texas Motor Speedway
Texas Motor Speedway took a creative and controversial path a year ago when it signed the politically powerful National Rifle Association as the title sponsor of its spring NASCAR race.
This year, a controversy of a different type is coming to Fort Worth.
TMS has signed a three-year deal with hunting call company Duck Commander, owned by the family featured on the top-rated Duck Dynasty. The TV show became part of a national debate late last year when family patriarch Phil Robertson made anti-gay comments during a magazine interview and claimed he didn’t see mistreatment of black people in the pre-civil rights South.
Eddie Gossage, president and general manager of Texas Motor Speedway, said the dust-up over the GQinterview didn’t factor into this deal, which was two years in the making. He said he doesn’t see the deal as courting controversy.
“I look at the duck call and what it stands for, the [new branded] iced tea and what it stands for,” he said. “Neither of those is controversial.”
