Texas Law Forbids Man to Take Pregnant Wife Off Life Support
Erick Munoz and his wife Marlise, both paramedics, had spoken of a ‘do not resuscitate’ plan before a tragic incident in late November left Marlise brain-dead. Now her distraught husband is unable to carry out her wishes because of a Texas law that dictates she must be kept alive until the fetus is viable.
If anything ever happened to his wife Marlise, Erick Munoz says, she would never have wanted to be kept on life support. But the worst did happen, and since the tragic incident in November that left the 33-year-old woman brain dead, that’s exactly what he’s had to do.
Marlise, from Tarrant County, Texas, was entering her second trimester of pregnancy when she collapsed suddenly after a suspected pulmonary embolism on November 26, and has been in the hospital on life support ever since. Texas state law dictates that she must be kept alive, even if it goes against her wishes, until the baby can be delivered.
