Arizona State’s Steve Patterson Accepts Texas AD Job
Arizona State athletic director Steve Patterson has been offered and accepted the same job at the University of Texas, a well-connected source familiar with the school’s search told the American-Statesman this morning, and which other outlets are reporting as well.
University president Bill Powers and an eight-member advisory committee that includes two current members of the Board of Regents picked Patterson over West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, who was widely considered the frontrunner for the last month. Patterson was selected over Luck, the source said, because he had more “business experience, more coaching hires and is a master in marketing.”
Patterson, who has been the athletic director at ASU only since March 2012, is a Texas graduate as well as a graduate of the UT Law School. He served as a long-time executive with three professional sports franchises in Houston, including the NBA champion Houston Rockets. He also helped owner Bob McNair bring an NFL expansion franchise to Houston and lure a Super Bowl to Houston.
