Famous Texas Restaurants and Food Chains
By: Ben Carpenter, Guest Contributor
The restaurant business is one of the many things that Texas does well. With tons of well-known businesses, Texas has produced some of the most innovative and tasty food companies. From fast food restaurants to famous delicatessens, Texas is one of the main hubs of restaurant start-ups.
I have decided to write about a few of my personal favorite restaurant chains and franchises that have come from Texas.
Blue Bell Creameries
Blue Bell ice cream may not be a worldwide treat, but for a Texan there is nothing like it.
Blue Bell Creameries was originally the Brenham Creamery Company from Brenham, Texas. In 1919, a schoolteacher came along and saved the company from going under. In 1930, he named the company Blue Bell Creameries, after the famous Texas Bluebell flower. The ice cream was sold in Brenham and the surrounding areas for quite some time but didn’t start picking up business until the 60s.
Blue Bell has that distinct flavor that few ice cream companies can match. Call me boring, but my personal favorite is the homemade vanilla, which became the company’s flagship flavor and bestseller.
Having served Texas its famous ice cream for more than 60 years, Blue Bell ice cream is what Texans crave during those hot summer days.
It is hard for me to pass a Schlotzsky’s restaurant and not pull in for a delicious Signature Original. Since 1971, Schlotzsky’s has been serving Texans their delicious array of stacked delicatessen style sandwiches.
The restaurant was started in Austin, Texas, but quickly grew out of state. With over 700 stores around the nation, Schlotzsky’s is one of the top franchises from Texas and has a signature sandwich like no other.
Schlotzsky’s famous tag line “Funny Name, Serious Sandwich” says it all about this company. Their mouth watering original sandwich has taken them from a small deli in Austin, Texas, to a national restaurant chain.
Now I know that fast food is not the healthiest choice when it comes to eating, but when a restaurant as good as Whataburger is right down the street, it makes it hard to say no.
The franchise is famous for its Whataburger burger, a beefy cheeseburger that is flavorful and filling.
The franchise started out in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950 with the intent of making a burger that made your mouth water. Having accomplished their goal, in just ten years opened up over 17 restaurants in three different states, Whataburger became a burger sensation.
The company has over 700 stores and is a restaurant that Texas is proud to call its own.
Pizza Inn was opened by two brothers in 1958 in Dallas, Texas, and quickly rose in popularity.
The taste of the pizza became a craze that grew throughout the North America. The restaurant has been known for their innovative pizza flavors that other pizza places wouldn’t dare pioneer in.
With flavors such as the taco pizza in 1979 and the classic bacon cheeseburger pizza in the 90s, this restaurant became an American Favorite. In 1994, Pizza Inn was named number one pizza chain by the “America’s Choice in Chains” consumer poll.
In recent years, Pizza Inn has not been as popular as it once was in the United States, but this pizza joint is one of the most desired restaurants in the Middle East. There are Pizza Inns in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Having spent a summer in Oman, I can say it was nice to taste some Texas Pizza.
You may enjoy these restaurants as much as I do and you may not, but there’s one thing we can both agree on: you won’t go hungry here in Texas.
