When it comes to Texas travel, there is definitely a lot to see. There is a huge variety of great getaways just a short drive from some of the big cities such as Houston, Austin, El Paso and Dallas. We’ve compiled a list of a few of Texas vacation hideaways that are literally located just around the corner.

Galveston

Galveston is one of the top Texas travel destinations because it simply has so much to offer. The beach front offers a range of activities including Frisbee, crabbing, swimming, relaxing and sun tanning. The Seawall is painted with beautiful murals that spread all along the waterfront, and the seafood restaurants offer the freshest and most delicious dishes to be found. Those with an eye for architecture will love the range of historical homes with everything from adorable gingerbread houses to huge Italian mansions. Sightseers might also be interested in learning about how the city was rebuilt after a devastating hurricane hit Galveston in 1900.

Fredericksburg

Any discussion of Texas travel is incomplete without including Fredericksburg. While wineries might not be the first thing that visitors to Texas might think of, there are many different wineries in the area that are both beautiful and productive. German immigrants first settled the area in the 1840s and the area still has a German feel to it with its many historical buildings and German bakeries. Visitors looking for shopping that cannot be rivaled in the large cities of Texas will love the many offerings of Fredericksburg including antiques, locally grown foods and beautiful jewelry pieces hand crafted by local artisans. The area is also full of beautiful bed and breakfasts and hiking trails.

Concan

The town of Concan offers everything the outdoor enthusiast could possibly want with its proximity to one of the most popular rivers in Texas – the Rio Frio. All sorts of river activities are available in this Texas travel destination, including kayaking, fishing, inner tubing and rafting. If a city-dweller is looking to escape the heat, this is definitely the place they’ve been looking for! Another wonderful feature of Concan is the Frio bat cave where visitors can check out the world’s second largest Mexican free-tailed bat population from mid-March to mid-October. Nearby are the Lost Maples Natural Area and Garner State Park for nature enthusiasts to experience Texas leisure at its finest.

South Padre Island

When it comes to Texas travel beach vacations, South Padre Island is the place to be. It is located on the tropical tip of Texas and bordered by the Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. This location offers wonderfully warm Gulf waters that visitors can enjoy in a variety of ways, including fishing, boating, sailing, swimming and soaking up the beautiful rays of South Texas. South Padre Island offers a variety of shopping, night clubs and restaurants for visitors to enjoy regardless of their ages or interests.
